For Mental Health professionals
Dr. Mundt’s seminars and workshops are frequently developed for mental health professionals working with war veterans and other trauma survivors , and are designed to build upon existing competencies by teaching therapists and clinicians about the unique experiences, presentation, and needs of these clients. However, content can be geared towards the particular needs of specific audiences, including those who work with warzone veterans in specific settings (ie, medical care, correctional facilities, college counseling centers, employee assistance programs, or veterans service organizations), or who work with their partners or families. Where veterans are the focus, Dr. Mundt’s primary goal is to provide the participants with knowledge about how mental health problems present in combat veterans, usually with a specific focus on veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the typical deployment experience of our returning troops, including by linking specific warzone experiences with the psychological symptoms that they may produce. There is also often a substantial focus on the experience of “homecoming”, and the challenges that veterans face in reintegrating into civilian society. Dr. Mundt's seminars and inservices may also therefore include information about Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a frequently concurrent problem, along with information about other common challenges and special considerations that arise in the treatment of these veterans such as substance abuse, suicide and violence. There will be a discussion of effective treatment approaches, with emphasis on a “hierarchy of needs” perspective. Additionally, participants can receive information on disability and healthcare benefits that may be available to these veterans, along with guidance on how to assist veterans in accessing these.
Dr. Mundt also presents on mental health topics not specific to veterans, such as trauma and PTSD, stress management, effective disability advocacy for clinicians, and other subjects.
For other professionals
Dr. Mundt provides profession-specific training to professionals who work in the academic, legal or law enforcement fields. As with the seminars provided to mental health clinicians, a primary focus is typically on the mental health problems experienced by combat veterans, particularly in the new generation of veterans who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. Presentations to attorneys and judges, to law enforcement personnel, to academic faculty or to other audiences will of course also focus on the ways in which these mental health issues are most likely to manifest in the “world” of those professionals. In other words, Dr. Mundt intends through these seminars to answer the question, “What do I, in my profession, need to understand about combat veterans?” Content of specific presentations can be flexible and geared to the specific needs of a particular audience. As above, Dr. Mundt is also available for trainings and inservices on stress management and on understanding trauma/PTSD, where this may be useful for agencies or companies.
For the general public
Dr. Mundt is available as a professional speaker on an array of issues and topics related to mental health, particularly those that are relevant to the experiences of combat veterans, both in the warzone and in civilian society. He provides dynamic, down-to-earth descriptions of warzone deployments, of the homecoming process, and of the related mental health problems frequently suffered by veterans.
**Dr. Mundt’s seminars and presentations are non-political in nature, and do not adhere to any particular political stance or agenda. An inherent goal of all presentations offered is to enhance the understanding of non-veterans as to the challenges faced by those who have served in the military, in the hopes that veterans can receive from civilian society the support, the respect and the empathy to which they are entitled.**
